Dr. Emily Keener, an Associate Professor of Psychology at Slippery Rock University, is a  feminist psychologist whose work focuses on gender from a lifespan developmental perspective. They earned their doctorate in lifespan developmental psychology at West Virginia University, their masters in experimental psychology at Radford University, and their bachelors at Wheeling Jesuit University. Dr. Keener is committed to the use of gender inclusive language and thus uses they/them/their pronouns. 

RESEARCH

Dr. Keener is interested in the complexity of gender. They seek to understand the distinctions among gender identity, sexual identity, and gender expression.  For example, their research seeks to understand how situational factors influence gender-expression and how others perceive and respond to those behaviors in various contexts. Dr. Keener regularly publishes research in top journals such as Sex Roles. They recently served as guest editor for a special issue of Sex Roles on masculinity and femininity and was the co-editor of the Society for Women in Psychology newsletter.

TEACHING

Along with teaching Research Methods and Statistics, Dr. Keener teaches Psychology of Women, Gender, and Culture and Human Sexual Behavior. In addition, they are actively engaged in educating women on topics related to social justice, advocacy, and leadership and is passionate about promoting freedom from gender roles and helping others see that men and women are more similar than different.
